ZILLAH, Wash. -- He's a one man dynasty. Zillah's Chris Castillo has won state wrestling titles in each of his 1st three years with the Leopards.
Plus, Castillo is the nation's fifth best wrestler in the 152-pound weight class. What makes Castillo so good?
"Heart," He says. "A lot of heart. Since I was young, I won't give up. It doesn't matter if I'm wrestling a guy I'm not supposed to beat."
His brothers got him into wrestling. In return, he developed the heart of a Leopard, a Zillah Leopard. That has made him into a 3-time 1A State Champ.
"You're more nervous when you go out there," said Castillo. "It's more like you have the weight on your back, like, man, you have a lot of pressure."
His accomplishments did not happen by chance. It took dedication.
"Having to work out all the time, it gets to you," He says. "Especially, when you're younger because I didn't know if that's what I wanted to do. But, since last summer, when I took 3rd in Nationals I knew, this is what I was meant to do right here."
His performance at nationals earned him All-American honors. That is an honor that comes with the privilege of training at the US Olympic facility in Colorado Springs. And that has given Chris the chance to dream big, Olympic big.
"It's touched my mind a couple of times," He says. "I am going to try out for it. I'm going to go to the Olympic qualifier."
