PASCO, Wash-- From flying out to space to right back where she started, a local astronaut is back in the Tri-Cities.
Dottie Metcalf-Lindenberger just returned to the US after spending time on the international space station. She graduated from Whitman College and Central Washington University, then taught in Vancouver. And she has eastern Washington to thank for sending her to space.
"It was while I was teaching that one of my students asked how do you go to the bathroom in space? And since I didn't know what the bathroom looked like, I googled it and in finding the answer to the toilet question, I also found the application for educator astronaut. So I applied and I got the job!" she explains.
Dottie will give a speech Saturday to the graduating class of Whitman College. Then on Sunday during commencement, she'll receive a prestigious award from the college.
