Yakima Schools Foundation hosts fundraiser breakfast for students
YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Schools Foundation held its 12th annual "Celebrate Our Youth" fundraiser Wednesday to benefit students and programs in the Yakima School District.
The event's keynote speaker was Ryan Asdourian, also known as Blitz, the Seattle Seahawks mascot. He says it's important for the community to give more than just a donation.
"Education is about getting involved with your time and your money so that you actually impact the lives of those that are growing up and shape our future," said Asdourian.
The breakfast is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the private non-profit. School field trips to the Capitol Theatre and museums in Seattle, band uniforms, and funding for local debate teams all have come from the foundation.
In 2009, the event brought in $38,000, which was down from the previous year. Organizers pointed to a slow economy for the dip in donations.
