Yakima Police Officer camps out on the roof of Top Food

YAKIMA, Wash. -- We were right there with Lt. Mike Merryman as he was hoisted to his annual perch at Top Foods. It's part of the Yakima Police Department's efforts to raise money for Special Olympics.

This is Merryman and the Yakima Police Department's seventh year participating in the Cop-On-Top fundraiser. The Yakima Fire Department lifts him to the roof of the building, where he'll camp out until Thursday evening taking donations.

"People can see that we're not just about throwing people in jail and dealing with the negative aspects of life. You know, there's the positive things that we do as well," said Merryman.

Over the last six years YPD has raised $15,000 for Special Olympics. Merryman says the Law Enforcement Torch Run, Tip-A-Cop and Cop-On-Top fundraiser's are all volunteer based, not required by the department.

If you'd like to donate to Special Olympics go to the Top Food on Washington Avenue.
