New firefighter training could save lives

Posted: Updated:

A room full of darkness and smoke. It's a scary scenario for many, but it's part of the newest Fire Department training drill.

We're told the objective of the two-week training period in Richland is to work on implementing new operating guidelines. The new protocol focuses on injured firefighter assistance and rescue.

Crews say it's been a two-year process to reach this drill today. It's taken a lot of organization and a lot of man power to turn an empty 2000 square foot building into a firefighter's stomping ground, and they say they expect the training to be the most difficult they've experienced.

Over the next two weeks more than 300 firefighters will take part in the training.
