WEST VALLEY--Crews from Yakima, West Valley, East Valley and Selah had a tough fight against a brush fire along a steep hillside.
Firefighters say wind spread embers through this dry brush around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, threatening several homes along 84th Avenue and Poplar Way.
To make things worse, one of the Yakima Fire Department's engines broke down on the way to the scene.
"That really caused us to have to shift gears and go from an offensive attack to [a] defensive," Chief Charlie Hines, Yakima Fire Department, said. "Really delayed us in getting to the top of the hill for structure protection."
Crews did manage to protect those homes. Only a fence was damaged.
Investigators determined the fire was started by someone burning cherry plants. Firefighters want to remind you: outdoor burning is illegal in the city of Yakima.
