Yakima Fire Department warns against fireworks

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH-- Independence day is only a few weeks away and firefighters want you to know about the dangers of fireworks.

Fireworks are actually illegal in the city of Yakima along with many other cities and counties in Central Washington.  That's because of our desert climate, and even though we've had a lot of wet weather recently, crews still expect fireworks will cause a lot of trouble for them again this year.

"It doesn't take hardly anything to set them off.  You set a bottle rocket up in the air you got a dry shake roof, dry shrubbery, dry weeds they ignite like there's gasoline poured on them", says Captain Joe Riel of the Yakima Fire Department.

He says it's not only illegal to use fireworks in the city, simply having them is against the law.
