WALLA WALLA, Wash. - After two years of construction part of the new Highway 12 in Walla Walla is open. Drivers began using the new road at 10:00am Monday.
Tom O'Neil, Apollo Construction Superintendent, says overall the opening went very well.
The new section of Highway 12 now has four lanes. The Department of Transportation says the added two lanes will minimize accidents and maximize traffic flow. The completed construction covers 8.5 miles west of the city. Included with the new highway are three round-abouts and an overpass bridge.
O'Neil says the whole project is not complete. Crews are still finishing connecting all the round-abouts and one more on-ramp.
Work is expected to be complete by the end of July.
