Tonicx repeat as champs at Spokane HoopfestPosted: Updated:
SPOKANE, WA -- A shooting at the center of Spokane Hoopfest took the focus off the hardcourt on Saturday, but the spotlight was back where it belonged on Sunday. Another record turnout saw competitive championships in the 2010 installement of the world's biggest 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
Tonicx, led by former Gonzaga standout David Pendergraft and Ferris graduate Eric Benzel, repeated in the Men's Elite Championship, toppling Bam Jam Boise 21-11.
"It's so hard to get that second championship," Pendergraft said after the championship win. "You get that 'fat cat' syndrome. For us to go out there to stick together and grind it out there, that's a great accomplishment."
Associated Messenger's bid for a four-peat in the 6-foot-and-under men's division was derailed by a very game No Ceilings squad, as No Ceilings took their first-ever title, 20-11.
Proving just how important 3-on-3 experience is in this tournament, a squad led by former Zags Heather Bowman and Vivian Frieson suffered an early exit. The Women's Elite final saw a repeat of last year's championship matchup, but with a different result. TBA avenged their title game loss in 2009 with a gutsy 20-18 victory over Acme Concrete & Paving.
