A Mother's Mission to teach parents about swimming safety

RICHLAND, Wash., -- Exactly one year ago,  Darla Gambill's two year old wandered outside when she was supposed to be asleep.  She unlocked the gate and ended up face down floating in a pool.  By the time Darla found little Brooklynne  it was too late.  "I was asked do you want her cremated or buried?  No parent should be asked that question, ever, " says Gambill.

Gambill wants to use her pain and her story to help other parents be more aware about water dangers. Drowning is the leading cause of preventable death for children between one and four years old.  It is the second leading cause of preventable death for children between the ages of one and fourteen.

Mark Allen from the Benton Franklin Safe Kids Coalition says, "it only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown and 20 to 60 seconds for an adult."  He says, "with the river around here, we've already had around four to five drownings this year and 18 last year.  All of this would have been preventable if people would have worn a life jacket."

Gambill did have some advice for parents, "be within arms length of your child.  Don't look away, don't answer the phone, don't read a magazine, don't drink alcohol.  Because it only takes an inch of water for your child to drown."
