Improper firework use can lead to fines

Police say they deal with fires caused by fireworks every single year during the 4th of July weekend, and they don't expect this time around to be any different.

They tell me it's important people realize that setting off fireworks where it's not legal can come with serious consequences. Improper use which causes fires can lead to charges such as malicious mischief, assault, or a gross misdemeanor for having illegal explosives.

As a reminder, fireworks are legal in Richland, West Richland, Benton City and some areas of unincorporated Benton County. Enrolled Yakama nation members may light fireworks on tribal land, but they are illegal throughout Franklin County along with the cities of Kennewick, Prosser and Yakima.
