Tribal Fireworks off limits to non-members

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH---We've done many stories on firework rules and safety but a lot of people are still unclear about the rules.  In Yakima that's often because there are different rules on and off the reservation.

We were contacted by a viewer who says he bought fireworks on the reservation with plans to set them off on tribal land, just like he did last year.  But he later found out that Yakima County laws make it illegal for non-tribal members to both buy and discharge fireworks no matter whether they are on tribal land or not.

I asked do you need a tribal ID or anything to buy these.  They said, they didn't know any thing about that, said the man who asked to remain nameless.

The owner of that fireworks stand says he remembers this customer.  He said that when the customer asked about the rules he told him to check with police.  Remember fireworks sellers are business people and this is their most profitable time of year.  So if you're unclear about the law...your best bet is to check with Yakima Police or Sheriff.

or Sheriff.
