Madison, IND -
July 4, 2010

The winner-take-all final for the Lucas Oil Indiana Governor's Cup did not disappoint the fans.  In the end, it was the hometown boat, U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto - owned by the city of Madison, Indiana - taking the checkered flag and the Lucas Oil Indiana Governor's Cup.

For the U-1 team, it doesn't get much better than this:  a victory in the finals, the lead in the high points championship, two heat wins, and the fastest time in qualifying.

The Indiana Governor's Cup

A startling development in the final heat race of the day.  The U-96 Spirit of Qatar was unable to fire up and was forced to sit out Heat 3B.  The loss of points pushed Dave Villwock's team into fifth place, meaning he would have to start as the trailer boat in the finals.  That took the second fastest boat in qualifying and, arguably, the odds-on favorite to win, pretty much out of the running for the trophy.

The U-37 Peters & May driven by JW Myers picked lane 1 after points leader Steve David in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto picked lane two.  J. Michael Kelly in the U-7 Graham Trucking picked lane three.  Brian Perkins in the U-21 Albert Lee starting in lane 4 and Villwock and Mike Webster in the U-22 were trailers in the six boat finals.

Lane Assignments

  • Lane 1 - U-37 Peters & May - JW Myers
  • Lane 2 - U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto - Steve David
  • Lane 3 - U-7 Graham Trucking - J. Michael Kelly
  • Lane 4 - U-21 Albert Lee - Brian Perkins
  • Trailer outside - U-96 Spirit of Qatar - Dave Villwock
  • Trailer inside - U-22 Broadway Tavern - Mike Webster

J. Michael Kelly led the pack across the start line first. It was three boats side-by-side out of the first turns with Steve David grabbing the lead.  Kelly was a close second and JW Myers in the U-37 was in third after lap one.

David lengthened out the lead to nearly a roostertail on the second lap. The hometown, Madison-owned, U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto kept the lead at the end of lap two of the 5-lap final. Meanwhile, Kelly was in second, Myers in 3rd, and Perkins in 4th. David opened up a full two-roostertail lead on the back stretch of lap three. Myers closed the gap on second place Kelly, making it a two-boat race for second.

David rode the clean water to victory with a huge lead. Kelly was trying to hold off Myers, but Myers managed to slip by Kelly in the final lap, but Kelly grabbed the lead back to take second.

Final Results

  4. U-21 Albert Lee - Brian Perkins
  5. Trailer outside - U-96 Spirit of Qatar - Dave Villwock

Heat Races

In earlier heat racing, there were four different winners in the seven heats, but it could have been six.  In Heat 1C, Kip Brown in the U-17 had a clear lead and was headed for a win when the boat lost a gear box, giving JW Myers in the U-37 the win.  Ironically, the U-37 was the beneficiary again in Heat 3B.  After a very close race in which Jeff Bernard and the U-5 edged out the U-37, it was determined that the U-5 had a flagrant fuel violation and was disqualified, again giving the U-37 the win.
