A busy night for police and fire crews in Benton City. They say heavy winds and fireworks contributed to several grass fires.
Firefighters say they brought extra crews and volunteers out tonight to help with all of the calls due to firework use. We caught crews out on a call off of East Red Mountain Road in Benton City as they work to put out a grass fire started up by fireworks. The Fire Chief tells us the heavy winds tonight played a big role in several grass fires they had to deal with, but aren't surprised by the amount of calls.
"We prepared as much as we possibly can and it's always a tough weekend for us," the chief said.
He also says they will stay on close fire watch throughout the night and all day tomorrow as people continue celebrating and setting off fireworks. But remember, fireworks are not allowed in Benton City.
