Infinia Corporation receives $3 million dollar grant
Kennewick's Infinia Corporation was recently awarded a $3 million department of energy grant.
Infinia will use the funds to integrate energy storage capacity into its Powerdish system using thermal salt.
The Powerdish system produces power using the sun as its energy source, and its free-piston stirling engine to generate the electricity.
"You use mirrors to concentrate sunlight to make heat and then you convert that heat into electricity. But because you're concentrating sunlight to make heat, you can actually store the energy in the form of heat in a thermal salt or other thermal material to be used at a later time," says VP of Business Development Peter Brehm.
The grant was part of $62 million dollars doled out by the Obama administration in may to spur more research and development in the solar power industry.
