After nearly 32 years, City Manager Dick Zais will retire

Yakima, WASH-- A surprise announcement tonight at the Yakima City Council meeting...a fixture with the City of Yakima is retiring.  After nearly 32 years as Yakima's City Manager and 37 working for the City Dick Zais is hanging up his hat.

The unexpected announcement came during tonight's city council meeting.  Zais read a letter to the council reflecting on his time with the City.  Though the City Manager hires many people, he is the only one who is actually hired by the city council.  While most serves in that position 5-7 years, Zais has served more than 62 council members and 12 mayors.

"I think I've helped make a difference for this city and that's a legacy I'm very inspired by and I believe that anyone who succeeds me and  follows me would look upon as a stepping stone to the future", Zais told KNDO.

He plans to retire by July 5th of next year.  Zais said he has a few reasons for leaving now, including his recent engagement to a fiancée that lives in Olympia.

In other council news, at tonight's meeting the council appointed 25 members to the Yakima Gang-Free Initiative task force.
