Sweets Comeback, Take Down Corvallis, 6-5Posted: Updated:
WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Walla Walla Sweets were a force to be reckoned with as they battled valiantly in a come from behind victory over the Corvallis Knights, 6-5 on Wednesday night. Andy Matthews (L-C State) showed up huge for Walla Walla after a stint on the bench. Matthews stepped up to the plate with 2 outs, and Elliot Stewart (Cal-Poly) in scoring position. You could almost hear a pin drop as the ball hurdled towards the catcher. In a moment that every kid plays out in his backyard, Matthews smashed the ball over the infield, scoring Stewart, and giving the Sweets the win.
Christian Ramirez (UC Irvine) helped keep Walla Walla in the game tonight with a giant 2 run home run in the 4th inning. Catcher Elliot Stewart put on a show at the plate as well, going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's.
Things came to a screeching halt in the bottom of the 8th inning. In an effort to keep Walla Walla from sweetening their lead, and stealing home, a wild throw from a Knights' infielder caught an umpire square in the face. After a few tense moments, he eventually rose to his feet, and reclaimed his spot in the field.
Just when it seemed Corvallis was going to walk away with another win, Walla Walla tied things up in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI double from Elliot Stewart. Corvallis brought in RHP Mitch Patito to quell the storm. A fresh arm on the mound wasn't enough to stop the momentum that was building for the Sweets.
The Sweets will be on the road taking on the Wenatchee Applesox starting on July 9th.
