General from Richland recommended to replace Gen. Petraeus
RICHLAND, Wash.-- A Richland native has been picked to replace General David Petraeus. Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Thursday that he wanted U.S. Marine Corps General James Mattis to take over as the next Central Command Leader, overseeing military operations in the Middle East.
General Mattis graduated from Richland High in 1968.
President Obama and the Senate still need to approve Gen. Mattis. Gates says he is impressed with the General's "strategic insight and independent thinking." Gen. Mattis is best known for leading troops into the bloody battle of Fallujah in Iraq in 2004.
