Yakima Convention Center breaks ground on Outdoor Plaza
YAKIMA, Wash. – City Leaders broke ground on an expansion of the Yakima Convention Center Monday that is part of the city's Downtown Futures Initiative.
The Outdoor Plaza will add nearly 7,000 square feet of outdoor space featuring a new entrance and additional convention space, according to the Visitors and Convention Bureau. Crews will have to realign 8th Street for the new improvements.
The project is budgeted at $975,000 with funding coming from the Washington Capital Budget.
Construction including the realignment, streetlights, seating, planters, and landscaping is scheduled for completion in late September. Additional amenities should be in place by the end of the year.
The convention center has had two previous expansions since opening in 1976. It hosted 512 events in 2009.
