Average pay in Yakima is lower than the national average
Yakima, WASH-- The average wage in Yakima County was $17.85 in May of 2009. That's about 15% lower than the national average of $20.90 . The U.S. Department of Labor released those numbers today.
An initial reaction to this information might be, "Well Yakima has a lower cost of living then other places." But regional labor economist Don Meseck notes that while housing costs are typically much lower in Yakima than in metropolitan areas, the costs for everyday items like food groceries and gas, is usually the same or higher.
They study also showed that in the county there are higher percentages of people employed in education, community and social services, transportation, and training, than in the rest of the country.
