RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) - Gov. Chris Gregoire encouraged a federal commission examining U.S. nuclear waste policies to base any recommendations on science and technology, not politics.
President Barack Obama appointed the Commission on America's Nuclear Future following his decision not to proceed with the Yucca Mountain waste repository in Nevada.
The most dangerous radioactive waste the Hanford nuclear reservation was supposed to go there.
Gregoire said she supports an in-depth review of how the U.S. manages nuclear waste. But she said Yucca Mountain should not be permanently removed from consideration.
Washington and South Carolina have filed suit to block the Energy Department from killing the project.
