PASCO, Wash.—Good news for asparagus growers. There is now millions of dollars to compensate for crop loss between the years 2004 and 2007.
$15 million was awarded to the Asparagus Revenue Market Loss Assistance Payment Program. Framers will receive about half. The money will help with the loss of crops due to a tough economy, weather and imports.
One grower says just a few years ago they were producing 90 million pounds of asparagus. But this past year, they only produced 29 million.
Washington has some of the toughest grading standards in the country for asparagus growers. And 90% of that asparagus goes towards fresh markets.
The asparagus season is done for the year, but starts back up in April.
