Murray secures gang prevention funding for Yakima County
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced Wednesday, $750,000 in funding will be available for gang prevention efforts in Yakima County.
The Senate Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Subcommittee approved the funding for the Yakima County Gang Initiative.
Murray has also called on the U.S. Department of Justice to increase the federal anti-gang resources in the area.
"As gang violence continues to escalate in Yakima, we must ensure that critical programs have the resources they need to continue combating violence now and working to prevent it in the future," said Senator Murray in a statement.
The $750,000 Gang Initiative will help develop service programs to address the needs and problems associated with youth gangs in the county.
A coalition of law enforcement, teachers, social workers and community leaders will work together in addressing the root causes behind gang membership and violence.
The comprehensive gang-fighting initiative will have law enforcement focus on prevention, suppression, and intervention.
