PROSSER, Wash., -- Prosser Police Department is launching their "Text, Talk, Ticket " campaign July 23 - August 23. The purpose is to issue a warning to residents about the new law which went into effect June 10, 2010. While it's been illegal to use a phone while driving for more than a year, now law enforcement can pull you over primarily for being on the phone.
Sgt. Ed Blackburn says, " we want to give notice to our citizens that we're going to be doing extra emphasis on a law whenever we feel there's a need. People need to be reminded that there is a law out there and this being a new law is that kind of same thing." The penalty for the citation is $124.
Officer Antonio Martinez says, "I've seen people on their phones driving 10 miles per hour and swerving, so this law is necessary.
