Campers urged to use caution when lighting campfires

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Leaders with the Department of Ecology want to urge campers in state and local parks to use caution when lighting their campfires this summer.

Information has been posted in area parks reminding campers that burning garbage in a campfire is illegal and releases harmful pollutants that can pose health risks.

Campers need to make sure fires are allowed in the area before lighting a campfire. Only firewood and enough paper to start the fire is allowed.

Ecology leaders also stress the importance of attending the fire at all times, and to put the fire out completely before leaving the park.
Illegal burning can cause expensive wildfires and carry hefty fines.
