Huge grant awarded to Franklin County to combat gangs

Posted: Updated:

A generous $100,000 dollar grant to help combat gangs is now in the hands of Franklin County Prosecutor Steve Lowe.

It's from the Department of Commerce.

We meet up with Lowe, who says Franklin County is one of only eight counties in the state to be awarded this money.

He also tells us it comes at a good time, especially after the recent gang related shooting at Chiawana Park. "We've tried to keep the gang situation under wraps as best we can," Lowe said. "It's been a difficult year in gang cases. It's continuing to be more active. We want to target the individuals involved in that. We do have an idea of who we're talking about and we're working toward building cases towards them."

Lowe says the money will help them keep a deputy prosecutor that was scheduled to be laid off this year. This deputy prosecutor will focus on gang violence. Lowe also says the money will help make our community safer with no cost to local taxpayers.
