Kittitas groundwater rule comment period extended

Posted: Updated:

KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. -- In release sent out Thursday, the Washington Department of Ecology is responding to requests from the public by extending the comment period for the proposed groundwater rule in upper Kittitas County.
Comments will be accepted until August 25, adding 14 days to the comment period which was due to expire August 11.

New groundwater appropriations in upper Kittitas County have been regulated under emergency rule since July 2009.

Ecology stated in the release, "Unless new water withdrawals are mitigated, the current regulation would halt new groundwater withdrawals until more is known about the impact that groundwater pumping may have on senior water users and streamflows in the Yakima River Basin."

Comments may also be: Mailed to Department of Ecology, Central Regional Office, Attn: Mark Schuppe, 15 West Yakima Ave., Ste. 200, Yakima WA 98902-3452; Emailed to; or sent via fax to Mark Schuppe at 509-575-2809.

The official paper work extending the comment period will be filed with the state code reviser next week.
