Find the Right Book for Your Child

Posted: Updated:

If you're shopping for a book for a young child, it's important to keep in mind that what works for an infant doesn't always work for a 6 year old!  Children move through many stages during their first years of life, and the books they like have a lot to do where they are at developmentally.

Here a few suggestions from the Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program (www.pageahead.org) about what types of books work best for the different stages of a child's life.

Infants:

Like bright colors and easy rhymes

Enjoy falling asleep to nursery songs and lullabies

Like to look at pictures of other babies in books

Need durable books like cloth books or board books

Toddlers:

Like to read the same books over and over again

Like to look at board books

Like clear, realistic pictures

Like short, rhyming stories

Enjoy bathtub books and toy books

Like to choose books from a shelf

Explore the world by touch and taste

Preschoolers:

Like to play with language, and use singsong, nonsense words

Have a "wanna do it myself" attitude

Are fearful of the dark and strangers

Like simple folktales, not fairly tales

5 Year Olds

Like stories with animals that talk

Like simple folktales, some fairy tales

Believe in magic

Sometime confuse real and make believe

Recognize some letters of the alphabet

6 Year Olds

Like alphabet and counting books

Memorize poetry and nonsense verse

Like simple informational books

Like books about dinosaurs

Still like fairy tales
