KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Washington State Fraternal Order of Police got a $1,000 boost Friday. The Kennewick Wal-Mart made the donation for the "Shop with a Cop" event.

Every year, police officers volunteer to shop with children while they get Christmas presents for their family.

Usually about 30 children attend, and each get a $100 dollar debit card. The kids typically come from underprivileged families.

Sergeant Mark Webber, a detective with the Kennewick Police Department said, "With the police officers, I think it's an opportunity for them not to be seeing us in a negative role. A lot of these kids...their only interaction with law enforcement has been because they have been a victim of something, or the only time they have seen us is when something bad has happened. This is a chance for them to do something with us that's very positive."

The program has been around for several years. The actual "Shop with a Cop Day" will be on December 11th.
