Wildcats post highest team rushing total in 12 years in 44-30 win over Clan

Posted: Updated:
BURNABY, B.C. (Sept. 25) -- Senior Bryson Kelly (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) ran for 246 yards and four touchdowns, and redshirt freshman Ishmael Stinson (Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) added a career-best 154 rushing yards as the nationally-ranked Central Washington University football team escaped Terry Fox Field with a 44-30 victory over Simon Fraser University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The win improved Central's record to 3-2, keeping them perfect in the GNAC at 3-0 and setting up a first-place showdown with fellow unbeaten Humboldt State (3-1, 2-0 GNAC) in Arcata, Calif., next Saturday (Oct. 2). Simomn Fraser, in its first season of provisional NCAA Division II membership, fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The duo combined for 400 rushing yards between them, becoming the first Wildcat pair to surpass the 100-yard rushing total in the same game since Oct. 5, 1991, when Joey McCanna and Kenny Thompson did so in a 73-21 win over Pacific University. The individual totals were career-bests for both players, and Kelly's mark was the fourth-highest in school history.

The game was close throughout, and ironically, neither team scored in the first quarter. Each team scored 10 points in the second quarter on a touchdown and a field goal, as Kelly scored the first of his four touchdowns on the opening play of the period. After Simon Fraser tied the game on a 64-yard scamper by Gabe Ephard just 98 seconds later, the Wildcats regained the lead on the first of three field goals by sophomore Sean Davis (Federal Way, Wash./Todd Beamer HS) -- a 26-yard attempt -- with 6:33 remaining in the half. The host Clan then knotted the score again on a three-pointer of its own with just over a minute left before halftime.

Central, ranked 22nd in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II poll and 11th in the D2football.com poll this past week, accounted for all of the scoring in the third quarter, highlighted by the exploits of Davis and Kelly. Davis kept his perfect field goal percentage alive with a 35-yard kick on Central's first series of the second half, and Kelly, who had 69 of his rushing yards in the third period, added a 22-yard score with 1:58 left to push the Wildcat lead to 20-10 entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, both teams scored at a frantic pace. Central Washington had possession of the football for nearly 12 minutes in the quarter, totaling 162 rushing yards on 22 carries in the final stanza. However, the Wildcats were outgained in the period by a resilient Simon Fraser squad, which accumulated 203 yards of offense on just 14 plays, including 104 rushing yards on just three carries that was highlighted by a 70-yard scoring run from Ephard. The Clan also scored on a 60-yard wide receiver pass play from Tore Corrado to Ben Allen late in the period.

Stinson amassed nearly all of his 154 rushing yards in the fourth quarter, carrying the ball 17 times for 140 yards in the final 15 minutes of the game. He found the end zone with an insurance touchdown with 1:31 remaining to give Central what was then a 44-24 lead. Only a late touchdown by Simon Fraser with five seconds left narrowed the final count to a 14-point margin.

The offensive shootout was highlighted by several milestone performances by both teams. Central's 381 yards rushing were its highest single-game total since a 370-yard performance against Azusa Pacific on Sept. 19, 1998, and the Wildcats broke the 500-yard plateau for total offense (508) for the first time in nearly two years. Individually, Kelly also became the first CWU player with 250 or more all-purpose yards in eight years, adding six receiving yards to his rushing total.

For Simon Fraser, which had scored just 43 points in its first three games combined, Ephard ran for 222 yards and two touchdowns on just 14 carries. He had scoring runs of 64 and 70 yards in the contest, and the Clan also totaled 225 passing yards on 19 of 35 attempts. Central's defense did intercept SFU starter Ryan Schwartz three times, including a team-leading third interception of the year from redshirt freshman Stan Langlow (University Place, Wash./Curtis HS) early in the third quarter.

Central Washington converted on seven of its eight trips into the red zone on Saturday and finished with a commanding 15-minute edge in total offense. Senior punter Kyle Petersen (Alta Loma, Calif./South Hills HS) had his best punting day as a Wildcat, booting a 60-yarder to bolster his game average to 48.3 yards per punt.

The Wildcat defense was led by senior Adam Bighill (Montesano, Wash.) with nine tackles, including two for losses, and six stops by senior Paul Wright (Martinez, Calif./De La Salle HS). Sophomore Tre Watson (Seattle, Wash./John F. Kennedy HS) and junior Dominique Gaisie (West Covina, Calif./Bishop Amat HS) joined Langlow with interceptions by the defense, while Gaisie was also credited with a blocked field goal in the first quarter.

Central Washington will make its final out-of-state trip of the regular season next week when it visits Humboldt State next Saturday (Oct. 2) with a 6 p.m. kickoff at the Redwood Bowl in Arcata, Calif. The Wildcats then play four of their final five games of the year at home.
