KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Kennewick Police are reporting they collected 225-pounds of prescription narcotics during the first-ever Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.
The nationwide event is sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Take Back Day is an opportunity for people to get rid of medication that's outdated or isn't going to be used.
Take Back Day is also an effort to help prevent teens from easily getting prescription drugs and abusing them, which police say is a growing trend.
The drugs collected Saturday were turned over to the D.E.A. to be destroyed.
The total retail value of the drugs is placed at $250,000, which is approximately $1,250.00 street value if sold illegally.
