Safety board questions vit plant work

Posted: Updated:

(AP) - A key facility for cleaning up decades of nuclear weapons waste at Hanford must not be commissioned until technical issues are resolved.

That's according to the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.

The panel is meeting in Kennewick, and the chairman says a "learn-as-we-go philosophy" is not prudent for this facility.

The plant is designed to convert 53 million gallons of liquid wastes left from the production of plutonium into a glass-like substance.
