MADRAS, Org.—A 19-year-old is dead after a three-vehicle accident on Highway 97.
Oregon State Police say 19-year-old Yardley Antonio Rico was driving on Highway 97 just after 4:00pm Saturday when he crossed into the next lane with oncoming traffic.
Rico's car hit another vehicle with two passengers before smashing into a pickup. Rico died before police arrived. The first two drivers hit were not injured. And the man in the second car was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police say they're investigating what caused the driver to cross into the other lane.
"Well, we'll be looking into the driver who died in the crash, what he may have been doing during the last 24 hour period. We want to see if we can rule in or out any unknown factors such as some distraction, fatigue, alcohol and or drugs," Lieutenant Gregg Hastings, Oregon State Police.
Highway 97 was closed in both directions for two hours.
