YAKIMA, Wash. -- The property owner of the proposed strip club on South 1st Street in Yakima has filed a federal lawsuit against the city.
Owner, Jamie Muffett names the City of Yakima, members of City Council, and City Manager Dick Zais. Muffett is claiming for civil rights violations and damages after the city denied his request for a license to open a topless dance club.
Muffett's attorney, J.J. Sandlin says the city should have given his client the opportunity to conduct his business since it was legal. "Why in the world didn't these folks say: okay, this is another expression of capitalism. He's either going to make it or he's not. If he doesn't, he's going to fall on his own sword, and they'll close doors in a couple of months," said Sandlin.
After much public protest, the hearing examiner denied the request in July.
A spokesperson for the city says they have not been served the lawsuit yet, so they can't comment on the matter. Sandlin says he plans to serve the city sometime next week.
