YAKIMA, Wash. – Close to 150 students finished a marathon on Sunday at Sarg Hubbard Park in the 3rd annual Fitness for Kids event.
But they started those 26.2 miles a few months ago. The first 25 miles were completed between August and October individually and then as a group, they ran the last 1.2 miles Sunday.
Organizers say it is another way to keep children active with more distractions at home getting them out of shape.
"The main key is getting the families involved," said Barry James, event organizer. "Getting the parents out there and the kids, setting out some family time for walks and hikes."
Elementary students between kindergarten and sixth grade took part in the event hosted by the Yakima Hard Core Runners Club. In addition to keeping the kids active, the program tries to teach goal setting and building endurance.
