A Umatilla County Sheriff's Deputy says 6 year old, Milani Meza was the only victim in a fatal, early morning house fire near Milton-Freewater.

A Sheriff's Deputy tells KNDU 35 year old Marilu Meza was inside the home with her five children when the fire broke out. The children range from ages 1 1/2 to 17 years old. Meza was able to get four of the five children out of the house. Milani didn't make it out.

Deputy Sheriff Greg Dunagan with the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office said, "She tried to get her kids out, came outside, accounted for all but one. She made a couple more attempts to get...the last child, but by then the fire spread too much and she just couldn't get back in the house."

The mother and one of her other children were rushed to Province St. Mary's Medical Center in Walla Walla for smoke inhalation and minor burns. Another child was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for second degree burns to her hands and feet.

The home is located on Locust Road near Milton-Freewater. It started around 2:30 AM Tuesday. The Oregon State Fire Marshal and Umatilla County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating. They say it started with a wood burning furnace.
