THE DALLES, Ore. -- A pedestrian is dead after he was hit by a commercial vehicle along Interstate 84 in Oregon early Wednesday morning.
Oregon State Police say 67 year old George Elmo Balzer was walking in The Dalles area around 5:25 AM along the interstate near milepost 83. A group of commercial trucks passed him. They say he was "staggering down the middle of the two lanes". A couple of the trucks slowed and moved toward the shoulder to pass Balzer. A 52 year old truck driver from Wasco slowed to 25 MPH to pass him, but he fell underneath the truck and was run over.
Balzer, from The Dalles, was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver, Mark Gosson, was not injured.
Troopers and the Wasco County medical examiner are investigating. Preliminary information suggests the Balzer had a mental condition, that may have been a factor.
Eastbound lanes were closed for over two hours, but traffic is back to normal now.
