Phone scam targets small businesses

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- A phone scam is targeting small businesses in Benton County.

The scammers call posing as Benton PUD employees and claim the business is late on their electric bill.

They then threaten to cut-off electric service unless they get a credit card number.

Benton PUD found out about the scam after two of their customers fell victim.

"We want our customers to know they should be very leery of phone calls to them in any case. Whether they are asking for bank numbers, social security numbers, or credit card numbers, because usually that's a phone scam," says Communication Manager Karen Miller.

Miller says the best thing to do when you're not sure if you're actually talking to a Benton PUD employee, hang up, and call their office directly.
