Man scammed out of nearly $29,000

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- It seems scams are popping up all over the place; especially during difficult economic times. One victim got so caught up in a string of scams that he gave away $29,000, hoping for that big cash award.

Kennewick Police say a man wired $28,954 to somewhere in Jamaica, after he received a letter in August saying he won a large sum of money. Like most scams, the victim was asked to first send them money to ultimately get his winnings. So he did, and he kept on doing it with a string of similar letters and scams from Jamaica.

Eventually he ended up sending nearly $29,000 overseas before he realized...maybe something isn't right.

KNDU spoke with a former Customs Agent who says there's a reason so many scams are sent from other countries.

John Smith says, "now you're talking about jurisdiction rights. It's very difficult to do, to get prosecutions because in a lot of those countries they're not interested because a scam, the money comes from the U.S. they really don't care."
