TOPPENISH, Wash. -- About 200 tons of hay worth about $32,000 was destroyed by a fire in Toppenish Friday afternoon.
Firefighters with Yakima County Fire District 5 responded to the fire just before 6 p.m. on the 3,600 block of McKinley Road.
When crews arrived there were already about 270 bales of hay on fire and other haystacks threatened. Crews worked quickly to provide protection and move the unburned hay away from the fire.
By Saturday afternoon the haystack continued to smolder. Firefighters say the fire could continue to burn for the next several days.
Meanwhile, the property owners will be on site to monitor the fire.
The Yakima County fire marshal is handling the investigation and will look into what caused Friday's fire.
