YAKIMA COUNTY - Washington State Department of Transportation leaders Thursday announced Yakima County will be receiving $2.2 million to help improve aging bridges.

Yakima County will receive $825,127 to replace the bridge on Meyers Road near Zillah, and $734,054 for the one on Hillcrest Drive in Terrace Heights. Another $657,120 will be used to replace the bridge on 12th Avenue in Union Gap.

"Some of these bridges are beyond the point of repair and need to be replaced in order to protect the traveling public," said Kathleen Davis, Director of Highways & Local Programs Division with WSDOT in a statement.

WSDOT and the Bridge Replacement Advisory Committee reviewed 69 applications. Of those, 47 city and county projects were selected across the state. Funding comes from the Federal Highway Bridge Program.

The committee's main goal is to improve traveler safety through replacement and rehabilitation of old, worn out bridges owned by cities and counties.
