PROSSER, WA-The Benton County Canvassing Board Friday reviewed 1,321 ballots that had been held up because of some clerical mistakes.
Runners who picked up ballots from the drop boxes had transposed some numbers, and the board had to look at the discrepancies before allowing election workers to count the ballots.
"They get a little tired by the time the process is all over and so some mistakes can be made," says Auditor Brenda Chilton. "The important thing to remember is there was a clear chain of custody and no possibility for any tampering."
Election workers have also mailed letters to about 200 voters who didn't sign their envelope or the signature didn't match what the auditor has on record. Those voters have until November 22 to contact the auditor's office and get their ballots counted.
