Memorial Hospital and PNWU offer free diabetes screenings
YAKIMA, Wash--Sunday is World Diabetes Day and health care providers with Memorial Hospital and Pacific Northwest University donated their time to raise awareness about the disease. Saturday nearly 300 people got free diabetes and hypertension screenings. The medical staff stress that diagnosing and treating these diseases is essential to living a healthy life.
"These conditions both can lead to long term complications with the health with heart disease, heart failure, diabetes, can lead to blindness kidney failure many medical problems", says Dr. Linda Welch of Pacific Northwest University.
They're also focusing on prevention. Dr. Welch advises that the best ways to avoid getting diabetes and hypertension in the first place are to maintain a healthy weight and diet, exercise, and don't smoke.
