Registration Changes for Toys for Tots

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.--  Donations to "Toys for Tots" are way down and the price of toys is way up.  Volunteers in Benton and Franklin county are having to make some big changes in how they give out toys.

Those wanting to register will not be calling a phone number this year.  They'll need to attend a registration event on one of four days: November 20th and 21st and December 4th and 5th, from 10:00am until 4:30pm each day.  When registering, bring a photo ID and provide a 2009 tax return.  Bill Stott explains, "We're having people bring in proof of wages this year because our program is really designed just to help the needy.  Last year we had a lot of people go through the line and they literally abused the system."

Toy pick up is also changing this year.  Because of overcrowding and too many people going through the line several times to pick up toys, one parent from each family is invited to the distribution event on December 11th at 10:00 am at the Benton and Franklin County Fairgrounds.  The parent will be required to bring a registration card provided on the sign up dates, and picture ID.
