Benton County District Judge Race heads for recount

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Benton County canvassing board certified election results from the November election. However, the ballot counting for district court judge will continue.

The race between Alex Ekstrom and Dan Kathren will head into a recount. That's because Kathren's only has a nine vote lead.  Kathren says it's not news to him, "I've been expecting that for some time now. We always knew it would be close but not this close. We'd rather it be over with certainly but this is the way the system works and I don't know of a better system in the world."

The board will begin recounting ballots on November 29th. The process is expected to take two weeks. State law requires a manual recount if the margin between the candidates is less than a quarter of a percent.
