Holiday crimes on the rise

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash . - It's the busiest shopping day of the year and with that comes an increase in crimes, especially for shoplifters and car prowls.

Kennewick Police call them crimes of opportunity. "Basically they walk by and see an opportunity and if no one is watching they see if they can get into a car and take something really quick without being seen," said Officer Aaron Hamel, with the Kennewick Police Department.

Here are some tips to stay safe: don't shop alone, lock your car, carry only the essentials in your purse or wallet, hide your GPS or MP3, and keep gifts and purses in the trunk.

Also if you see someone suspicious, don't be afraid to call police. "If they are looking around the car trying multiple door handles, obviously they are prowling cars. Get a good description of them and call 911," said Hamel.
