State officials want help people give wisely

SEATTLE (AP) - Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed and Attorney General Rob McKenna want to help Washington residents avoid bad charity deals this holiday season.

They visited the AARP Fraud Fighter Call Center in Seattle on Friday to release the state's 2010 report on commercial fundraisers. The report gives consumers detailed information about the charities that pay companies to fundraise for them and what percentage of charitable gifts go to the fundraisers.

Reed would like more people to research charities at the Secretary of State's website or call his office before making a decision to give. McKenna encourages people to contact his office if they feel they are the victim of fraud.
