Shopping at Borders can win schools money

Posted: Updated:

UNION GAP, Wash- Retail areas are already packed with holiday shoppers and if you're in the giving mood, you may want to stop by a Borders bookstore this weekend.

Through Sunday November 7, Borders is partnering with, a website that lets schools, teachers, and districts post request for projects they want funded. Anyone who makes a purchase at a borders story this weekend will get a $15 dollar donation code to use on the Donors Choose website. They can apply that code towards funding any school they want.  This evening there were 18 funding requests on from schools in Yakima and Kittitas counties.

"Once we heard that this was happening we started emailing all the classrooms and teachers to get the word out because we know that there's not enough money going into the education system and we want to do everything we can to make sure the community gets the benefit of what we're doing", says Mishele Day, sales manager for Borders in Union Gap.

In addition to the $15 you get to donate from making a regular purchase, you get another $15 to donate if you purchase "Waiting for Superman", a book about education in America.
