KENNEWICK, WA-Some students at Kamiakin High School hope their classmates will stop texting long enough to get this message.
Members of DECA brought Kennewick Police Officer Mike Gaines to campus on Friday. Gaines showed students videos to prove how quickly things can happen when drivers take their eyes off the road to send a text.
"We're all guilty of it," says DECA Vice President Mayra Valdovinos. "You think, for one second, you can do it, but really all it takes is one second to crash, so we need to bring awareness so that people stop texting and driving and know that it's really dangerous."
Statistics show that one teenager in Washington State dies in a car crash every six weeks as a result of distracted driving.
