YAKIMA, Wash -Starting January 2nd, Yakima will have a new interim police chief. Friday the Yakima city manager announced that captain Greg Copeland will be stepping in to replace Chief Sam Granato.
Captain Copeland has been with YPD for the last 20 years. He currently serves as acting deputy chief and oversees the investigative division. Because of 2011 budget cuts the police department was already losing two management positions. Copeland's appointment will take away another so city officials say his appointment will be short.
The road towards getting a permanent police chief will likely be a lone one. The city hopes to appoint a long-term interim chief to replace Copeland in a few months. After that depending on how the special election goes in February, the mayor or city manager will appoint a permanent chief.
Because of the time those processes take, it is likely that Granato's permanent successor won't be named until after 2012.
